moon, by evening

The eastern sky a rich shade of blue, with sky and cloud indistinguishable, except where the clouds are gleaming through paler shades to white, mixed together like the surface of a pearl, with no roundness to show that the moon is shining there.

And then as evening advances and clouds drift on, the moon gleams whitely over the sky, and below it scraps of clouds are side-lit with whiteness, faintly luminous, like tattered ghosts.

Later, mackerel skies shift over the moon, clouds in even clumps like fish scales, so that the moon swiftly glows through the thinner and is dimmed by the thicker clouds, light rising and sinking in fast exchange with the swiftness of the moon.
