One advantage about writing by hand is that you get going and write much more quickly than for a computer.  Which means it can be carried out while waiting for the oil change, or the dentist appointment.

Though this can be hard on the writing flow -- just as soon as you get warm to the work, it's time to drop it.

And it's rather demoralizing to realize that you could have sat down and written, but didn't, and so you wrote more in your waiting for appointment times than in your purportedly free time, which you spent reading or surfing the web or what have you. . . .
