prudence and paladins

Prudence is a virtue.  So is wisdom.  And courage, as Aristotle observes a long time ago, is the midpoint between two extremes, namely cowardice and foolhardiness.

Which means that if paladins aren't ever allowed to retreat from a fight, they aren't, in fact, pillars of virtue and goodness.

(Why, yes, I've been reading something with D&D paladins in it.)
