one advantage of jumping about

Actually, there is one real advantage to the jumping about from story to story method that I use. 

It makes it much easier to shove a story to the backburner and let it sit there.  I've got other stuff to do.

Then I can pull it off and take another look.  See if I figured out the plot problem.  Or read what I actually wrote, instead of what I was thinking of writing at the time.

There are upside to every technique.  0:)
