there was this knight

Once upon a time. . . .there was this knight.  Now he's still a knight -- an eldritch knight, haunting the crossroad.

And I know how he came to be there.  Indeed, snagged an idea I've had for a long time, tried to turn it into a story before, too, and stuffed it in there.  To realize with glee that it resonated with the main themes of isolation and abandonment.

But -- well, I need some alternative explanations.  Because while the heroine will spout of that tale, she will spout off others to emphasis he's wrapped in mystery -- to make the hero's desperate attempt to discover the truth by asking the knight all the more desperate.

The first and obvious one is that he's yet another of the monsters that they are going up against.

The second is a kind of Flying Dutchman curse, he swore to do something and will strive until Doomsday.

But a few more might prove prudent.
