the magic goes away

Ah, the fun of discovering a story's theme only on revision. . . .

There's one in which the heroine realizes that the magic has gone out of -- well, her practice of magic.  Nothing like having it be a job to drain it down to mundane.

A commonplace problem whenever a main character is a wizard, but not always grappled with.

sigh.  Now I have to wrassle with what she does find still enchanting.
