fortunetelling and foreshadowing

Ah, the temptation to have a character foretell the heroine's fortune.

Because it's cheap foreshadowing.  If the fortune-teller says she's going to live a very different life from her cousins'. . . .

Even if the other characters murmur that the fortune-teller is always talking like that and discount it entirely, it still obviously has to be true because it's cheating not to have a prediction come true.  (Unless it's made obviously silly up front.)

sigh Such a temptation.
