Thinking Inside the Box

How to write:  think inside the box!  (It's written about movies, but it applies to other stories too.)

Which is one metaphor for it.  I tend to go by whether an idea smells like it's part of the same story.

And if you want to talk about either one and sound all academic-like, you can talk about the unities.  In particular, the unity on which Aristotle harped:  unity of theme.  Everything in a story has to come together.
