Essie is living at a bitterly cold mining colony, with her seven drones, when a shuttle from another planet crashes nearby. She and Petey, who runs the bar, find its sole occupant did survive. She helps him. find his name is Dane, and then helps him to repair the shuttle.
Only then does she learn that he knows more of her than she had realized, and that her life is going back into trouble.
It involves a fiercely hot planet, a fake war, a guard who remembered Essie's mother and another who was in Essie's past, removing hair dye, listening to her mother's remembered voice, a drone acting dumb (which isn't difficult for it), Dane's father, the backstory of why she landed in that colony, and more.
The Snow White retelling is done with a light hand -- helped by the way it starts in the middle.
