time passes

So, what do our young scholars do that evening?

If the story is to cover the school year, it has to skip large gaps of time.

But it struck me as a very unlikely that they would just go to bed after dinner, they hadn't much else to do, and so I am starting them on their next trip to the library, which will move the plot along.  So we are still on the same day on which a great many things have happened.

At least after this they will have some less plot-worthy stuff to occupy their hours.
