Mud, Mary, mud.  remember the mud.

It's all very well to remember that when your heroine and her companion are trudging through the swamp, off the path, and she even falls down once, and near a pool, they will get thoroughly besplattered with mud and rather soggy.

The thing is, you have to keep remembering it. Once they get out. Unless there is a cut between scenes, you have to show them cleaning or changing the clothes, or they stay muddy.
