Crosstalk by Connie Willis

A novel about communication and a device that lets you communicate emotionally. And some unintended consequences.

Like telepathy. And discoveries about your family.

It involves Briddey, who has a family with no respect for boundaries, and a boyfriend she plans to have an EED with. She gets a lot of warnings about consequences. But none of what actually happens.

And it involves zombie movies, feeding ducks, a bequest's consequences, a fraudulent psychic, a girl who knew of a sailor's ship being sunk, and more. [Spoiler (click to open)]I must observe that the tales of saints hearing voices do not fit the details of telepathy as depicted here -- why did they always think the voices were heavenly and not, say, diabolic? Also, St. Patrick wasn't Irish.
