My efforts:

Arabella shuddered, ever so daintily. "I don't know how you expect us to stand it. Sitting here, waiting, as if we were outwaiting a spring rain, when those hateful things are coming after us."
I wondered how Arabella had won her exile. Nothing willingly, since it sent her from court.

"It's a quote," said Talia. "Dao Te Ching. 'Now arms, however beautiful, are instruments of evil omen, hateful, it may be said, to all creatures. Therefore they who have the Tao do not like to employ them.'" She looked up. "He's got a point."
"He didn't have to research weapons."

"At least B3958 died. I can't wait until this one dies too."
His companion snorted. "Better not let Hutton hear you, Dombrey."
"Maybe he'll fire me. At least I won't have to face those things again. One spat acid at me. I nearly had a scar for life. Hateful things."

Alladine looked imploringly at Selysette, and tears gleamed in her eyes.
"You can't do this to me," she said. "You wouldn't believe what he said to me, horrible, hateful things. He can't be trusted." She touched Selysette's sleeve. "He'll do it to you when he doesn't get what he wants."
