Phoebe and the masquerade

Was contempating the masquerade in Phoebe and the Unicorn, where the unicorns live casually among us and go unnoticed.

One of the big differences between them and Calvin and Hobbes is that everyone can see Marigold and probably every other unicorn (or common orn 0:).  Which nevertheless means no attention because they protect themselves with the magical Shield of Boringness (only much fancier font) to convince everyone that it's boring, looking at a unicorn.

Since the unicorns are all conceited, vain, and self-absorbed creatures with no interest in being admired by a creature so ugly as a human, it's not only an effective way, it's a plausible one; unicorns would be willing to use the magic all the time necessary.  Means and motives make for a better masquerade.
